SPX has been awarded a contract to bring processing capacity at Arla Foods' Aylesbury fresh milk plant up to 1bn litres a year.

North Carolina-based SPX announced this week that its Flow Food and Beverage business had been awarded a contract to install a planned second processing system at Arla Foods' fresh milk plant in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

Arla Foods contracted SPX in 2011 to install a "customized" processing system at its Aylesbury plant capable of producing 650m litres of fresh milk per year.

The £150m (US$230m, €205m) Aylesbury site was officially opened in May 2014 by Owen Paterson, the then British Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Under this latest contract, SPX will design and install another processing system.

SPX expects to complete the Aylesbury project by the end of the year.

Once concluded, Arla Foods' Aylesbury plant will boast the capacity to produce 240,000 litres of fresh milk per hour and 1bn litres per year.

At full capacity, around 1.5m bottles of milk will leave the plant each day.

This, Arla Foods claims, will make Aylesbury "the world's largest and most technically advanced."

"The Arla plant in Aylesbury features some of our most sophisticated, highly automated, and energy efficient dairy processing systems, which have helped make it not only one of the world's largest dairy facilities, but quite possibly the world's most sustainable dairy plant," said Marc Michael, president, SPX Flow Food and Beverage.
