FrieslandCampina has announced that it is switching to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited cardboard in the Benelux countries.

The Dutch dairy giant said it would make the full transition for all its cardboard beverage packaging in the region by the end of 2011.

Magda Buelens, environment director at Tetra Pak Benelux, one of FrieslandCampina’s key packaging suppliers, said: “We are delighted that a leading organisation such as FrieslandCampina is the first in the Netherlands to make a large scale transition to FSC cardboard. It is proof that there is a growing realisation of the importance of sustainable, renewable raw materials.

“The visibility of the FSC accreditation on FrieslandCampina’s brands will certainly contribute to awareness among consumers.”

The FSC accreditation gives an assurance that the wood fibres in the packaging are traceable all the way through the supply chain and come from responsibly managed forests.
