Global confectionery manufacturer, Perfetti Van Melle, has partnered with Unilever to introduce a range of individually wrapped ice-creams under the Spanish lollipop brand, Chupa Chups.

The products, including Chupa Chups Calippo Shots in Cherry Banana and Cola Lemon flavors, are set to launch across Western Europe in spring 2016.

“In this first stage, two new Chupa Chups Calippo Shots SKUs have been created that are linked with the authentic flavors of the lollipop: the classic Chupa Chups Cola flavor, with the added refreshment of lemon; and the Sour Cherry with Banana flavor, a more exotic combination,” a Perfetti Van Melle spokesperson told DairyReporter.

“Going forward, additional flavors will be studied for future launches.”

Chupa Chups' loyal following

Marta Ballesteros, senior brand manager, licensing at Chupa Chups, said, “Chupa Chups as a brand has an incredibly loyal following, with many consumers having fond memories of enjoying our lollipops over the course of many years.

“Our distinct visual identity and range of exciting flavors translate perfectly well into ice cream and we are thrilled to be working with such an expert partner as Unilever on extending our reach into the frozen novelty category.”

Larger scale launch after 2010 success

Perfetti Van Melle told DairyReporter that this was not the first Chupa Chups venture into ice cream.

“There were previous collaborations with Unilever over a decade ago.  The most recent ice cream licensing deal was signed with Unilever in 2010 for a local project in Spain and Portugal and its great success boosted this new launch to a larger scale,” a spokesperson said.

The agreement was brokered by Perfetti Van Melle’s brand extension agency, Beanstalk.

Unilever recently announced all of its single-serve ice cream range in the UK would be contain 250 calories or fewer, or 100 calories for children’s ice-creams and a spokesperson for Unilever told DairyReporter that “all Unilever products are produced within our guidelines, including the Calippo Chupa Chups shots.”
