Parmalat founder Calisto Tanzi has had his 10-year sentence for stock market manipulation reduced to eight years, ending a court battle over the company’s collapse in 2003, according to Reuters.

As the French dairy Lactalis launches a takeover bid for Parmalat, the highest Italian court, the Corte di Cassazione, sent out a reminder of the Italian firm’s past.

Tanzi was at the head of Parmalat in 2003 when bankruptcy unearthed a €14bn hole in its accounts. For his role in the events, the 72-year old founder of the company has now received an eight year sentence for market rigging and is still involved in other trials.

In another case, Reuters said a Parma court sentenced the businessman to 18 years on charges of fraudulent bankruptcy and criminal conspiracy.
