The functional sweetener developed by dairy giant Arla Foods, Gaio-tagatose, has been granted approval by the South Korean government. The decision opens the door to a previously untapped market for the low-calorie product.

"South Korea is an advanced market for functional foods and we're very pleased with the decision from the South Korean authorities," said executive director Henrik Andersen of Arla Foods Ingredients.

Australia and New Zealand are also moving closer to approving the use of Gaio-tagatose in food products. In both countries, the application is currently subject to public hearings and a decision is expected within the next few months.

The USA was the first country to approve the new sweetener, which is extracted from lactose and the product is now used in a number of food products.
