The authors of a new online dictionary to give the names of food ingredients and products in 34 different languages are seeking sponsors to speed up translation.

The food dictionary is being developed by EFFoST (the European Federation of Food Science and Technology) and Waganinen University’s www.foodinfo.net . It has already been launched at www.fooddictionary.eu with some 3000 basewords in 34 different languages.

But the authors are still working on it, and they want to have more than 5000 basewords by the end of this year. To speed up the process they are looking for sponsorship, and funding to pay translators at European universities.

Ultimately all food-related words – from aroma compounds to E-numbers, edible organisms to cooking terms – will have a description, image and video and/or sound – as well as an E-number, CASnumber and scientific name where possible.
