Arla Foods given go-ahead to complete EGM Walhorn merger

Arla Foods’ has been given the green light by relevant competition authorities to complete its merger with European dairy cooperative Eupener Genossenschaftsmolkerei Walhorn (EGM Walhorn).

With regulatory approval granted, Arla Foods is preparing to welcome 800 EGM Walhorn cooperative owners in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands - extending its membership to 13,500.

Arla, owned by dairy farmers in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the UK, will for the first time also boast members in the Netherlands.

The merger, which was unveiled by Arla Foods in March 2013, is expected to close on August 1 2014.

“We are delighted to get the green light for this merger, and we are ready to welcome our new cooperative owners and colleagues from Walhorn," said Tim Ørting Jørgensen, vice president and director of Arla’s Central European operations.

"This merger will provide new opportunities for our business not only in terms of an increased supply of raw milk, but it also creates a platform for increased export to growth markets outside the EU. We are prepared to begin the integration process and look forward to generating the greatest possible value from the new joint business."
