Dutch dairy giant FrieslandCampina has completed its acquisition of Belgian mozzarella producer, Fabrelac.

The dairy cooperative, owned by farmers in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, announced earlier this week it had been given green light to complete its purchase of Fabrelac by the relevant competition authorities.

“Royal FrieslandCampina has successfully completed its acquisition of the Belgian mozzarella producer Fabrelac,” it said in a brief statement. “This completion follows approval of the transaction by the competition authorities.”

“With this acquisition FrieslandCampina expands its cheese portfolio," it added.

The Dutch dairy agreed to acquire Fabrelac for an undisclosed sum in July.

Fabrelac, established in 1933, produces mozzarella in a variety of forms, including Cagliata di Bufala and fresh and individual fresh quick frozen (IQF) grated and diced mozzarella. It also manufactures Kiriti salad cheese, whey ingredients and cream.

It currently boasts the capacity to produce 30m kilograms (kg) of mozzarella a year.
