The short supply of Velveeta reportedly is limited to just one region and expected to be short lived. That didn't stop people on television and social media from reacting in a panic, a testament to the power that a popular, long-standing brand can have over consumers.
A keen-eyed staffer from AdAge noticed several grocery stores in the New York City area were bare of the popular cheese product. Kraft Foods spokesperson Jody Moore confirmed the shortage and pointed at the fact that the edible is a frequent fixture of January and February football-watching gatherings.
“Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks,” Moore reported via email.
The Kraft spokesperson was quick to reassure Velveeta enthusiasts that the problem was limited to one part of the country, and the bricks of orange cheese would be restored on the shelves shortly.
“It’s a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand,” Moore said.
However, despite assurances that the Velveeta shortage would be—well, short, that didn’t stop Twitter citizens from panicking over the possible loss of the item.
