The top five news stories of this year take the reader right across the dairy industry - from Danone’s latest efforts to rejuvenate fresh dairy consumption in Southern Europe to Chobani’s continuing dominance of the US yogurt market.
Top of the table in 2012 was ‘Top 5 US yogurt brands - Chobani wins while Danone, Yoplait brands lose out’.
New York-based Chobani featured again in our top five - but this time for slightly less braggable reasons.
Chobani did not, however, make it into Rabobank’s Global Dairy Top 20. New Zealand-based dairy exporter Fonterra slid from third to fourth in the league table, with French dairy group Lactalis claiming its 2011 standing.
This year’s collapse in fresh dairy consumption in parts of Europe also featured heavily on DairyReporter.com in 2012.
To account for the unanticipated decline in demand, French dairy giant Danone was forced to issue a profits warning in June. The firm took a number of actions over the year in an effort to counter the fall in consumption.
