IDFA pushes US to prevent Chinese dairy trade block

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) has urged the US government to act quickly to prevent US dairy exports being turned away from Chinese borders.

On April 22, the Chinese government informed US officials that China would block imports of US dairy products from May 1 due to alleged deficient export certification.

US dairy exports to China totaled $180m in 2008 so the IDFA is pushing the US trade representative Ron Kirk and agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack to act swiftly so that trade is not interrupted.

“If U.S. dairy exports are shut out of China, other suppliers can quickly move in and displace U.S. market share, which would result in a loss of business and jobs for American dairy processors and suppliers,” said Connie Tipton, IDFA president and CEO.
