The UK's National Farmers' Union (NFU) has repeated its demands for a two pence per litre increase in farm gate milk prices at the National Dairy Event 2003. NFU deputy president Tim Bennett and dairy advisor Phil Hudson both gave speeches about the milk supply chain at the event.
The union believes that changes in the marketplace since the beginning of the year should be better reflected in the price farmers receive. Milk price negotiations are currently at a crucial phase and dairy farmers in the UK expect prices to rise from 1 October 2003.
NFU dairy chairman Terrig Morgan said: "We stated at the beginning of the year that changes in market fundamentals dictated an increase in farm gate milk prices of at least 2ppl and farmers have a right to expect that money to be paid to them.
"Fundamental to the price increase is an improvement in returns from the cheese markets. If the market is operating properly, we expect prices to rise. We will already have met with the major supermarkets by the time the event starts and we hope to continue the dialogue over the two days of the event.
"The NFU will be vigilant in ensuring the market is functioning the way it should and farmers get a fair deal. No-one should underestimate the mood and determination of dairy farmers. Prices must rise."
