Atex Explosionsschutz Gmbh, a German company that provides fire and explosion safety systems for the dairy industry, has recently introduced the Atex Dewpoint monitoring system to monitor the absolute humidity of the dryer exhaust air to help better control the drying processes.

Atex said the quantity of moisture being removed from the product is a critical indicator of how well the process is operating and can predict the quality of the final product.

Operators can use this information to make adjustments to their process parameters, get quick feedback and tune the process to operate at optimal conditions.

Reducing product loss

Too much rest moisture in dairy powders can make them sticky and lumpy, which not only reduces product quality and shelf life, due to microbial growth, but also reduces product output due to sticking to process equipment, which increases cleaning costs and downtime, the company said.

Conversely, too little rest moisture affects the physical and nutritional properties of the product as well as increases the risk of in-process fires or explosions.

Furthermore, when the powder is too dry, this means that excessive energy is being used.

When the process operates optimally, the customer is able to improve the process and product quality, while reducing energy costs and shortening the gap between supply and demand by reducing product loss and process downtime, and Atex Explosionsschutz says the Atex Dewpoint system helps achieve this.
