Exhibiting at the World Dairy Expo this week in Madison, Wisconsin, Dairy Quality Inc. showcased Dairy Health Check, the company’s latest mobile technology for dairy farmers to better monitor the health of their herds and quality of milk production.

Canadian dairy company Dairy Quality was founded in 2012 to provide conventional and organic dairy farmers with mobile-based technologies to monitor the health of their herds and in turn the overall quality of their milk.

All-in-one herd health records

Dairy Health Check is an all-in-one mobile device that combines Dairy Quality’s SCC (somatic cell count) Check and Ketosis, and PregTest Tracker mobile applications using a compact microscope device that attaches to virtually any Apple mobile device.

“Ketosis Check will help farmers detect subclinical and clinical ketosis so they can manage the energy levels of their cows immediately after calving and correct nutrition deficiencies to reach peak milk production levels,” Gary Jonas, president of Dairy Quality said.

“We’ve received such a positive response to SCC Impact Reports, adding a secondary data aggregation and event scheduling tool for tracking breeding information, PregTest Tracker, was a natural progression.”

According to the company, SCC monitoring is a crucial part of herd health management because high numbers of somatic cells indicate the presence of pathogens, which can negatively impact milk production.

With health standards for North American dairy farms becoming increasingly more stringent, Dairy Health Check helps farmers manage the productivity and health of their herds in real-time.

Instant feedback and data aggregation

Instead of sending milk samples off to a lab where results could take up to a few days, Dairy Health Check provides dairy farmers with instant results (six seconds or less) when testing the milk of individual cows or bulk storage tanks.

The rapid feedback means that farmers can take action immediately if a sample returns a high SCC count and limit the spread of infection.

Recent testing at the University of Guelph revealed the accuracy of Dairy Health Check to be within 97% correlation with mist international dairy SCC lab testing.

“This is just the beginning of Dairy Health Check’s Evolution into a complete milk testing device,” Chris Gans, director of sale for Dairy Quality Inc. said.

“Our goal is give farmers a mobile device to manage all of their heard health data and records in one place,” Gans said.
