Dawn Food Products recalls bakery items after salmonella alert
Safeway said in a statement: "Valley Milk Products has voluntarily recalled the milk product due to possible salmonella contamination. Dawn Food Products used the recalled milk product in a vanilla cream custard mix, which was supplied to Albertsons and Safeway for use in bakery products."
No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the bakery items purchased, the statement recorded.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism entering the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled products were sold from the self-service and full-service areas of the bakery on or before December 15, 2016.
The products have a 'Sell by' date of December 20, 2016 (12-20-16) or earlier.
The recalled products were sold in Washington, Oregon and eight stores in Northern Idaho:
