FSA praised for science practice

The UK’s Food Standards Agency has been applauded by the Government Office for Science for its practice, use and management of science, and its transparency in holding meetings in public.

The FSA was established in the wake of the BSE crisis, which rocked confidence in the safety of the food supply chain and caused stern criticism of opaque stakeholder relations within government departments, such as the now defunct Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The review of the agency’s science practice also credits evidence-based risk assessments, and the commissioning of new research. However it warned that loss of funds in the financial climate could impact research and standards.

The review also suggested more collaborative working with Government and external stakeholders in the future, more consistent use of external expertise, and greater career opportunities for staff.
