German ice cream manufacturer Florida Eis has installed an Ishida X-ray inspection and checkweigher machine for quality control (QC) on its luxury brand, König Ludwig Glace Royale.

The IX-GA-4075 X-ray provides protection against foreign bodies and is ready for operation within 90 seconds, while the DACS-W checkweigher ensures the ice cream pots are the correct weight once they have been manually filled and automatically covered.

The range has 10 flavors, including Bavarian crème with fine elderflower, duet of yogurt and apricot, and intense cherry, in packaging made of dark blue, aluminum-coated 500ml paper cups.

Olaf Höhn, owner, Florida Eis, said as a manufacturer of premium products, the company is subject to scrutiny.

For reliably detecting foreign bodies, a metal detector was out of the question because an aluminium coating has been applied to the paper cups to give them a silver luster,” he added.

Not all foreign bodies that could potentially enter the production process are necessarily metallic – some are stones or plastic.

The future is in X-ray inspection technology and the procurement costs are more or less the same as for metal detectors.”

King Ludwig II

The theme of the Berlin-based company's ice cream is King Ludwig II, and it combines French patisserie with Bavarian desserts. The firm is now looking to expand production, switching to a two-shift operation and buying more QC systems from Ishida.

The Ishida IX-GA-4075 X-ray inspection system is installed at the end of the line and can detect tiny foreign bodies made from different kinds of metal in the -7°C ice cream. The inspection function operates regardless of the temperature and water content of the food.

The technology is based on intelligent genetic algorithm software. As similar contaminants are found again and again the system can, with each inspection, create an accurate comparison log. A data log collects visual and numerical information and eliminates recurring sources of contamination.

The checkweigher load cell has an accuracy of 0.2 grams. Products that are not the correct weight are separated by a pneumatic arm.
