Insect claim consumers declined to provide NAN follow-on formula for analysis: Nestlé India
The Indian consumers behind claims insect larvae were found in a pack of NAN PRO-3 follow-on formula “declined” to provide the product for analysis, says Nestlé India.

Reports emerged last week that a consumer, named as Prem Ananth, lodged a complaint with Nestlé India in April when he found insect larvae in a pack of NAN PRO-3 follow-on formula he'd purchased to feed his twin sons.

In a statement issued early last week, Nestlé India said it had "not been contacted by the consumer or the authorities in relation to this matter."

Nestlé India has since confirmed it received a complaint in April, but from Ananth's wife.

“We had not been able to connect the consumer complaint reported in the media in June with the complaint made in April as the respective complaints were made by two different people," it said in a June 6 update.

“We later drew the conclusion through subsequent media reports that the complaint raised in April had been made by his wife.”

Its latest statement mirrors reports the complainant was visited by a Nestlé representative, who offered to test and replace the NAN PRO-3 follow-on formula in question.

"We had proactively contacted the consumer's wife on 19 April and a representative of our company visited her and asked her to provide the product for analysis, which she declined to do," the June 6 statement continued.

"We again contacted the consumer on 29 April and once more asked her to provide the sample of the product to enable us to investigate her complaint. She has not at this time responded to this letter."

The New Indian Express reported, however, that the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration had tested the NAN PRO-3 in question, finding 28 live larvae and 22 rice weevils.

Nestlé India claims the technology used to produce NAN PRO-3 follow-on formula "excludes the possibility of insects living and surviving in the sealed package in which this product is sold."
