Norwegian dairy giant TINE has called upon the country’s government to reduce customs duties on butter imports to avoid a potential shortage over the Christmas period.

TINE, which is often referred to as the Norwegian dairy ‘market regulator’, had initially asked for tariff reductions until 1 September 2012 - extended to 1 December 2012 - to allow more imports of butter.

“We know from experience that butter sales increase before Christmas, and we want the opportunity to import more butter if needed,” said Tine communications director, Øystein Knoph.

The Oslo-based firm made an identical request to the Norwegian agricultural authorities in November 2011.

At the time, TINE attributed the shortage to an increase in production combined with unusually low autumn milk production.
