Toray Plastics has come out with LumiLid XL7W, a white, “easy-to-peel,” PET film for refrigerated and frozen dairy foods packaged in polypropylene (PP) containers.

Building on the Toray Plastics’ diversified lidding portfolio, the XL7W is a direct response the growing market demand for PP containers and compatible lidding film.

“Toray developed the LumiLid XL7W polyester lidding film specifically for dairy applications because a large segment of that market requires a white film with certain performance characteristics, including barrier durability and the ability to form a strong, secure, clean seal to PP cup surfaces,” Milan Moscaritolo, senior director of business development for Toray Plastics (America), told DairyReporter.

Versatile dairy product applications

XL7W film and Toray’s on-site manufacturing facility are Interstate Milk Shippers (IMS)-certified. Applications for LumiLid XL7W include dairy foods, such as cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt, butter, ricotta cheese, refrigerated processed cheeses and cheese spreads, and ice cream.

The PET film is also suited for non-dairy spreads, such as margarine and others that are plant-based (e.g. soy, almond, coconut milks), and non-dairy frozen foods and desserts.

Strong bond with an easy open

“LumiLid offers the perfect solution in many areas: functionality, production efficiencies, waste reduction, seal performance during distribution, and consumer satisfaction,” Moscaritolo said in a press release.

The base film of the XL7W lidding is Toray’s polyester, which is modified with an equally robust sealant layer, achieved by means of Toray’s proprietary extrusion-coated sealant blend.

That combination creates a film with a sealing range of between 200F and 350F, and that is able to maintain consistent seal strength during the sealing process.

According to the company, when XL7W is sealed to the PP container, it forms a “strong, consistent bond” sealing even through overfill on the rim of the tray. With its thicker, high-performance sealant, XL7W can often replace multi-layer laminations, which can be costly and have a less streamlined appearance on the package.

The XL7W seal is also strong enough to protect product freshness while being consumer-friendly, with a quick, easy, clean peel that resists shredding and complements premium package designs.

The new packaging film also features a robust narrow matrix line, which allows for more lids to be produced with reduced downtime and waste during production, the company said.
