Swedish engineering and consulting company ÅF has signed a contract with DalsSpira Mejeri for the delivery of a new dairy plant that will cover goat and cow milk production.

ÅF has been contracted to deliver the plant as an end-to-end solution in Färgelanda, in the Swedish province of Dalsland.

DalsSpira’s existing goat’s milk dairy is in Högsäter, in southern Sweden, close to the Norwegian border, around 20km (2 Swedish miles) from where the new facility will be created.

DalsSpira is Sweden's first and only publicly-traded dairy for goat milk. The company produces goat milk, yogurt and goat cheese.

ÅF has dairy experience

The contract is worth about $14.1m (SEK 12m), with the new dairy being completed in June 2016.

Magnus Andrén, ÅF area sales manager, told DairyReporter that ÅF had experience in building dairy plants, and he heard DalsSpira was looking to expand and move its facility.

“We have been building small dairies before, and we heard this from old colleagues and customers, so we had a meeting to talk about the project. We were informed that they had other quotes from engineering companies, so there were three competitors,” Andrén said.

“But because we had done a very similar project before, in that size, I think we had some good opportunities.”

Relocation covered by ÅF

The contract covers project planning and management along with installation of processing equipment including electricity and automation.

“We're not doing the building works, there is already a building there, and it's a good one, so they are just doing some changes, they are doing that themselves. We are doing the process, design, all the components, delivery, we do the installation and we do the commissioning,” Andrén said.

ÅF will also be responsible for relocating the current goat’s milk dairy to the new plant, which will have the capacity to produce up to 14,000 liters of milk per day.

Adding cow's milk to increase production

Malin Jakobsson CEO of DalsSpira, told DairyReporter that there will be three or four new jobs created by the new dairy, initially.

She said that production at the new facility would be increased.

“We will combine goat’s milk production with local cow milk and increase the production considerably. Both are an upcoming trend in Sweden,“ Jakobsson said.

ÅF is an engineering and consulting company for the energy, industrial and infrastructure markets, and has worked on a wide variety of engineering projects, including other dairy projects. One of its clients is the large French dairy company, Lactalis.
