A Spanish physicist has invented an ice cream that changes colour as it is licked.

Manuel Linares invented the ice cream – dubbed Xamaleon – after attending a cooking course and is now looking to find buyers to sell the product abroad.

The ice cream turns from blue to pink as it melts.

It is currently on sale in the town of Calella de Mar, in the eastern province of Barcelona, and is said to have a tutti-frutti taste. It includes strawberries, cocoa, almonds, banana, pistachio, vanilla and caramel.

But, like a true magician, Linares is refusing to give away the secret to what makes the ice cream change colour.

Various possibilities

“As a physicist I know that there are various possibilities that might work and I was delighted when I managed to crack it and create an ice cream that changes colour,” he said in media reports. “And as to the trick, I am not giving out too much detail because the patents are still going through.”

The ice cream only contains natural ingredients, Lineras added.

Lineras said he was inspired to create the ice cream by British ice cream inventor Charlie Francis.

Francis, founder of the firm Lick Me I’m Delicious, is renowned for his concoctions, which include a bubbly champagne ice cream dosed with 25mg of viagra, a glow-in-the-dark ice cream, and ice cream pottery made with a gramophone.
