Just in time for 'National Ice Cream Month': The Museum of Ice Cream to open in NYC
The opening of the museum concept comes at a time when ice cream is reaching peak popularity among US consumers. According to a recent market report by Nielsen, US consumption of ice cream has been on the rise for the past four years. Within the past 52 weeks ending May, 28 2016, Americans spent nearly $6.5bn on ice cream.
Located at 100 Gansevoort Street near the Gansevoort Street entrance to the Highline, the museum says it will provide “a lick-able, likeable, shareable ice cream-centric experience” from July 29 through the end of August.
The museum’s opening day will include free admission on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.The museum will then be open at 11 a.m. every day except for Tuesdays for an admission price of $18 for one adult or $30 for two adults, children under the age of 10 and senior citizens pay $12.
“A museum in our opinion celebrates creativity, passion, history, innovators and innovations and we created the Museum of Ice Cream in this spirit,” the museum stated on its website. “While we are neither a non-profit nor an official museum, we are built upon the foundation of sharing and celebrating ice cream.”
Interactive and edible installations
Curated by a group of “ice cream-obsessed” designers and artists, the pop-up museum will provide interactive and edible experiences for visitors.
Some interactive exhibit highlights include a swimmable rainbow sprinkle pool, edible balloons, an immersive chocolate room, and a collaborative massive ice cream sundae.
An “urban ice cream playground” installation will also be present where guests can swing on an ice-cream sandwich made for two, seesaw on an ice cream scooper, and find their match/favorite flavor on a custom app in Tinder Land.
Visitors can also take part in an ice-cream tasting created by food scientist Dr Irwin Adam, founder of Future Food Studio.
Local ice cream shops
“Scoop of the Week” presented by the museum will feature local ice-cream locations from “beloved arbiter of cool treats” such as Black Tap, OddFellows Ice Cream Co., and others. Included with the price of admission is a free scoop of ice cream from the weekly featured local ice cream purveyor.
The museum said it will not be offering any vegan, certified gluten-free or kosher items “during this time.”
