R&R Ice Cream has been given the regulatory green light to complete its proposed acquisition of Nestlé South Africa's ice cream business.

Last week, the South African Competition Commission announced it had "approved without conditions" R&R's agreed acquisition of Nestlé's South African ice cream business.

British firm R&R, Europe's largest private label ice cream manufacturer, announced in March it had agreed to acquire the business for an undisclosed sum.

The proposed deal was immediately passed to the South African Competition Commission for approval.

“The Commission has approved without conditions, the intermediate merger whereby R&R intends to acquire the ice cream business of Nestlé,” said the South African Competition Commission.

“Post-merger, R&R will have sole control of the ice cream business," it added.

The Nestlé business in question boasts a brand portfolio that includes Rolo, KitKat, Dairymaid, Country Fresh, Eskimo Pie, and King Cone.

Its products, produced at its Clayville site near Johannesburg, are sold across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

Yorkshire-based R&R Ice Cream, acquired by Paris-based private equity firm PAI Parters in June 2013, hopes the deal will act as a “springboard” for growth on the African continent.
