Ljubljanske mlekarne, Mlekarna Celeia, Pomurske mlekarne and Mlekarna Planika have been informed by Chinese authorities that they can export dairy products to China.

The Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food has been trying to find new markets for dairy products due to impacts from the Russian embargo and the abolition of EU milk quotas.

According to the ministry, permission for the registration of exports of dairy products to China opens up a huge market. Last year, China and Slovenia signed a protocol on the veterinary and sanitary requirements for dairy products, paving the way for the announcement.

Ljubljanske mlekarne is expecting to export UHT milk, while Mlekarna Celeia anticipates exporting cheese spreads and other value-added dairy products.

Some dairies produce milk powder for export, and the ministry says the Chinese are also looking for some fermented products.

The ministry also expressed the hope that the signing of the dairy protocol will speed up procedures for other food products.
