Prosperity Organic Foods (Prosperity) has launched new buttery sticks and a probiotic buttery spread to its Melt line, according to the company’s president and CEO, Meg Carlson.

All Melt organic products are available in stores nationwide for a suggested retailed price of $4.49 to $4.99, according to Carlson. The two new products reflect consumer trends in terms of heightened interest in digestive health and the need for healthier options in the traditional butter category.

“Our goal is to bring healthy and organic ingredients to the baking industry without sacrificing taste, texture or performance in the kitchen,” Carlson said.

The Melt organic products use healthy fats, said Carlson.

Melt organic buttery sticks feature Prosperity’s blend of Fair Trade Certified Virgin coconut oil combined with non-GMO Certified Hi-Oleic sunflower oil and Rainforest Alliance Certified palm fruit oil, according to Carlson.

“Melt buttery sticks bake and cook just like butter but with a third the saturated fat and fewer calories,” she said.

Carson said that the probiotic buttery spread delivers active cultures more effectively than yogurt because the probiotic GanedenBC30 survives 10 times better in the spread than in yogurt.

“Most consumers eat yogurt because of the naturally occurring probiotics in those products, yet by the time the yogurt is consumed, the total probiotic content has deteriorated significantly,” she said.

Expanding organic business

Mintel reported in 2014 that Melt organic buttery spreads are a disruptive entry to the $4.3bn butter and margarine category, and it would continue to expand across North America.

Launched in natural and conventional stores in 2012, Melt organic brand has expanded its range to 8,000 stores, according to Carlson.

“With consumers’ increased demand for simple, natural, plant-based, organic ingredients, the industry has been forced to respond,” she said. “By giving consumers an alternative to margarines, we see ourselves as a leader in reinventing the dairy-free butter substitute category as a whole.”

Prosperity expects its Melt organic line to grow by 60% in less than two years, Carlson said, and the company’s strategic priority this year is to double the Melt organic business by 2017.

We feel that out new products can help us do that successfully.”
