Alcan launches opaque yoghurt packaging

Alcan Packaging is supplying yoghurt manufacturer Müller with packs
for the launch of the latest product in its Yogz brand portfolio.

The packaging has been designed to combine visual appeal and practicality, and specifically targets the 5 to 10 year old market.

The packaging solution used for the fromage frais and fruit snack was the result of several months of development work by Müller in collaboration with Alcan Packaging and the machinery supplier, Hassia.

"The unique double tube format allows children to eat Squeezems directly from the pack. It is perfect to put into lunchboxes and very easy for children to open on their own," said Andrew Harrison, general manager of Müller.

Alcan Packaging produces and prints the material at its Sarrebourg operation in France. The material selected for the Squeezems pack is a two-ply laminate structure of 12-micron polyester and 50 micron PE.

The polyester is reverse printed in a gravure process and perforated in precise areas before being laminated to the PE, so that these areas become 'easy open'.

"An opaque laminate was also considered during the development process, but Müller was keen to use the transparent material so that customers could see the product through the pack," said Alcan Packaging spokesperson Tim Revell.

A new ink solution has also been applied to the packs, so that Müller can laser code its 'Best Before' date on the packs when they are filled at their Market Drayton factory. DataLase technology is a non-contact alternative to traditional printing methods. The ink undergoes a chemical colour-change and creates an image that is stable and has high contrast.

Alcan Packaging has a long-standing relationship with Müller as a supplier of lids and lidding material for its yogurt range, leveraging its pan-European capabilities.

Alcan is a leader in aluminium and packaging, as well as aluminum recycling. The group employs 54,000 people and has operating facilities in 42 countries.
