A packaging method that uses a gas additive could help prolong the
shelf life of liquid dairy products, its developer claims.

Sweden-based Ecolean said its controlled Atmosphere Packaging System (CAPS) offers the liquid food industry a new method to extend shelf life and improve safety.

The CAPS system is a new component of the existing Ecolean filling system for pasteurized products. The Ecolean filling system uses hermetically, factory pre-sealed packages.

The CAPS system adds a protection gas into the package during the filling cycle.

"The combination of a hygienic package, an opening-filling-resealing 2.4 second cycle and a controlled flow of protection gas will guarantee an even quality of the filled product," the company claimed in a press release.

Ecolean packages are 40 per cent calcium carbonate (natural chalk), with polymers used only as the binding agent. The Ecolean packaging is used by manufacturers of fresh milk, yoghurt, cream, kefir and other fermented products, and liquid eggs.
