Packaging testing tool can aid quality control, claims Mecmesin

Mecmesin said it will be demonstrating how critical it is to test packaging and maintain quality control at the Interplas show in September.

The UK-based force and torque measurement equipment supplier said that its new MultiTest-d system, which utilises a large LCD screen to offer comprehensive test settings and results information and can be used in manual, single or continuous cycle mode, will be on display at the UK packaging show.

Force and torque testing is an essential requirement in the development and manufacture of packaging in order to optimise design to minimise material usage without compromising performance as well as ensuring regulatory compliance.

The MultiTest 1-d, the latest addition to the company’s motorized packaging testing range, is a 1000N capacity stand for tensile or compressive testing using a digital force gauge and gripping fixtures and is easy to operator, even for infrequent users, said the company.

The company said that the equipment enables greater precision and fine tuning of critical test variables through enhanced potentiometer control as well as allowing automated testing of both force and displacement.

The manufacturer said that one of the most significant advantages of the Multi Test-d system is the ability to run continuous test cycles.

"Customers needing to perform multiple tests on a sample and requiring minimal set-up time can now automate them to run continuously, thereby removing the need for an operator to initiate every test manually,”​ stated the company.

The expansion of the data-transfer capabilities means that quality managers can now rely on the new MultiTest-d to plot the graph of force and deflection to analyse essential physical parameters such as co-efficient of friction, peeling forces and tensile strength of packaging film, according to the manufacturer.

The MultiTest range, according to the company, can be used to test a wide variety of packaging materials and components such as measuring the top load strength of PET bottles or the force required to lift open a ring-pull device.

Resistance to top-loading is a critical parameter in quantifying the design of and quality of any container, according to Mecmesin.

Interplas is taking place from 30 September to 2 October at the NEC in Birmingham.
