Smurfit Kappa has partnered with YéO, a subsidiary of the French dairy group Sodiaal, to create a Pouch-Up packaging for yogurt drinks.

‘La Fontaine à Yaourt’ is a yogurt drink made of mixed strawberries, without preservatives, manufactured in France and sold across the Intermarché supermarket chain.

10-day shelf-life

The 1.5L lightweight pack (which provides eight to 10 servings) has a shelf-life of 10 days after opening, is unbreakable, and has a low carbon footprint in comparison to glass and PET bottle packaging, according to the company.

Sylvie Barniol, marketing director, YéO, told DairyReporter, the packaging suits the needs of the whole family and is user-friendly, convenient to use and eco-friendly.

We can be innovative and pioneers on the yogurt market thanks to the Pouch-Up. It allows us to differentiate our range of yogurt drinks, made from fresh fruit not artificial flavoring,” she said.

We use milk from cooperatives in our region, which is organic, and this package allows for a substantial waste economy, therefore less pollution."

Barniol added ‘La Fontaine à Yaourt’ was one of 10 products chosen for the “Grand Prix des Innovations” awards organized by Intermarché supermarket, which supports and rewards innovative SMEs.

Wine, fruit juice, edible oils

La Fontaine à Yaourt won the award, after votes from the general public.

She said the product is easy to use thanks to its Original Vitop tap located on the outside, which is ‘perfectly adapted to yogurt drinks.’

Yéo produces a range of products from natural yogurt to blended, fruit, sterilized, flavored and bifidus yogurts.

Smurfit Kappa pouches are designed to extend the shelf life of liquid products such as wine, fruit juices and edible oils.

They are made from films that have oxygen barrier properties to preserve the liquid inside and are dispensed through a Vitop compact tap, which prevents air entering the packaging during dispensing.

Pouch-Up is free standing, with a single gusset on its base or a double gusset on the base and on the top. It can feature print to use color and graphics to attract consumers in the retail environment.

Smurfit Kappa has been expanding the product across different beverage sectors recently, for example, BeverageDaily reported it partnered with Pressade to launch an aseptic Pouch-Up for fruit juice.

The French organic fruit manufacturer has launched Pouch-Up in three flavors; apple, orange and multi-fruit.
