The US Food and Drug Administration announced that a petition has been filed by The National Yogurt Association (NYA) requesting that the agency revoke a handful of standards.
The trade group has called on the FDA to revoke standards of the identity for low-fat yoghurt and non-fat yoghurt, to amend the standard of identity for yoghurt in numerous respects, including incorporation of provisions for low-fat and non-fat yoghurt, and to amend the standard of identity for cultured milk in a variety of respects, including allowing for the use of the alternate term 'fermented milk'.
The FDA is calling for comments on whether the actions requested by the petition would promote honesty and fair dealing in the interest of consumers.
