Irish minister urges dairy market action

Ireland’s agriculture minister Brendan Smith says the EU must activate all support at its disposal to help the dairy sector through a difficult period, according to reports.

According to a report in the Irish Independent, Smith said that continued intervention for butter and SMP is needed after the country reached its mandatory limits of 30,000 and 109,000 tonnes, respectively.

"We are at a critical period in the market and as supplies come on stream in abundance in the next few months, I strongly believe that we need a multiple track approach - a short sharp utilisation of the full range of market management measures - to get the market back to equilibrium,” Smith is quoted as saying by the Irish Independent.
