Siggi’s dairy manufacturer, which makes traditional Icelandic-style yogurt, or skyr, is one company to benefit from the expansion, as a partner of the Emmi Group and has won a number of distribution deals recently, including Whole Foods after it stopped working with Chobani.

Skyr is a thicker and higher in protein than most yogurts as it is made from skimmed milk and has almost no fat.
“Emmi is a valued partner of ours on the manufacturing side of our business but we contract with them to produce a large part of our yogurt volume in the US,” said Siggi Hilmarsson, founder/CEO, Siggi’s dairy.
Emmi Roth USA will expand its yogurt manufacturing facility in Orangeburg, and Penn Yan to grow its market share in North America.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said the company’s $11.6m multi-year investment project, which includes hiring talent in dairy production and investing in food processing, makes this project fall within the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Council’s (FLREDC) strategic plan.
“The expansion of Emmi Roth USA in Penn Yan and Orangeburg will mean a stronger regional economy and further growth in the dairy industry,” he said.
Emmi Roth USA also packages bag-in-box milks and creamers for sale to foodservice operators.
“When we established our operations we certainly had choices, and making our choice to locate in Penn Yan has turned out to be a very positive one,” added Matthias Kunz, chairman of the Board, Emmi Roth USA.
The dairy industry is New York’s leading agricultural sector, accounting for more than one-half of the state’s total agricultural receipts.
In 2013, New York State became the country’s third largest producer of milk. Compared to 2012, New York’s milk production increased by 2.2% in 2013, compared to 0.4% growth nationwide.
