Food Safety Recall round-up 12-18 May 2018
High copper and zinc levels in food colours
England: Fabricake Sugarcraft is recalling two food colours used to decorate items (such as cakes) due to high concentration of copper and zinc.
All batches, sizes and dates of Rolkem Special Rose Gold and Rolkem Super Gold are affected.
Zinc was found at 54,500 mg/kg - ppm and copper 289,000 mg/kg - ppm in food colour from South Africa. Australia and Canada also received the product, according to the RASFF portal.
Due to high concentration of copper, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain are possible short-term effects from consumption of food items decorated with the product.
