The maker of the popular Chihuahua brand eyes continued growth as it takes over the oldest operating cheese plant in Iowa County.

V&V Supremo Foods has acquired Mill Creek Cheese, a family-run cheese production plant that specializes in muenster, queso quesadilla, queso blanco and brick cheese. The plant has been in operation since 1891 and was most recently owned by John and Mary Pitman.

The purchase of the Arena-based cheese factory will allow the Hispanic family-run firm to increase production and strengthen its portfolio, which currently includes the Chihuahua quesadilla cheese brand along with other Mexican cheese, crema and chorizo products.

V&V Supremo Foods currently has four plants in the US - two in Illinois and two in Wisconsin - and is hoping to continue its expansion through either acquisitions or new purpose-built projects, with a particular focus in the Midwest region.

“This acquisition is a very important step in our growth strategy,” said V&V’s Gilberto Villaseñor II. “It will help us meet the growing demand for our products and expand our presence in key markets.”

The factory will come under the V&V umbrella but all plant staff will be retained, the new owners have reported.

V&V will also expand, update and add new technology to the Arena plant ‘to bring [it] up to V&V Supremo’s current technological standards’ and add ‘features that will improve efficiency and quality’.
