Former UK government minister Matt Hancock, who resigned after breaking COVID-19 rules and was then expelled from the Conservative party after agreeing to appear on a jungle reality TV show, was ‘launching’ his own cheese brand on April 1. 

He had ‘hired’ a London-based agency to unleash Matt Hancock’s Cheddar – a ‘mature, tangy and quintessentially British’ dairy brand that features the ex-politician’s name and the strapline ‘Cheese for the people’ - ‘although whether the UK consumer is ready for Matt Hancock in their fridge remains to be seen’, quipped the branding company isobel, which was behind the prank.

“A makeover is underway on Britain's roads with the introduction of the UK's first 'cow crossing,' championing native animals over the traditional zebra crossing we've used for the past 70 years,” announced British dairy brand Yeo Valley Organic on April 1.

The Somerset-based company ‘commissioned’ research that showed that “in rare situations zebra crossings can create an optical illusion called ‘razzle dazzle’ due to the synchronised line pattern causing driver confusion. The cow crossing is immune to this due to the irregular pattern.”

Of course, the research, alongside the initiative, was an April Fool's joke – even if there is a  real 'cow crossing' at Yeo Organic’s HQ in Blagdon, England.

One of the more ambitious pranks this year came from Wisconsin Cheese, which announced the ‘opening’ of the first-ever cheese-themed spa. According to the announcement, ‘Wedgewater Spa in Madison, Wisconsin, offers an immersive cheese experience built on more than 180 years of world-class artisanship. This spa features a variety of premium beauty and wellness treatments that highlight the iconic cheeses that define Wisconsin in the eyes of the world.’

According to a press announcement, the ‘high-end cheese therapy trend' was 'beginning to spread’ and Wedgewater Spa was ‘poised to capitalize on exploding consumer interest in the recently revealed gamut of whole-body, well-being benefits of cheese’.

The ‘menu of indulgences’ included detoxifying in sodium-rich brine; melt stress away with ‘soothing, rich texture and natural lactic acids of milk found in Wedgewater's 4th-generation copper cheese vats’, and a ‘Gouda wax’.
