This week on the podcast we feature the Anuga event, which is coming up in Cologne (Koln) Germany, from October 9th to 13th.

Anuga is one of the events in the portfolio of Koelnmesse, and we speak to Koelnmesse’s vice president for food and food technology Anne Schumacher for an overview of the event, as well as one of the exhibitors, German dairy cooperative DMK, and their global head of corporate communications, Oliver Bartelt.

We also have our weekly look at the global dairy markets with Charlie Hyland at StoneX.

Anuga 2021

Around 4,000 companies from 91 countries have currently registered for one of the leading global food trade fairs.

With the aid of a new funding program of the Federal Government, Anuga 2021 is combining the physical event with digital features in the form of Anuga @home. The hybrid approach enables professionals from the food industry to connect with relevant contact partners in person or remotely.

Under the theme "Transform," the global trade fair for food and beverages is picking up on future themes this year and is presenting among others innovations from the cell-based proteins, meat substitute products, clean label, free-from, health and functional foods sections.

The congresses being staged parallel to the trade fair also address the key topic. For example, the New Food Conference is celebrating its Anuga debut this year with a focus on cell-based proteins. The sustainability conference of the Centre for Sustainable Corporate Management (ZNU) will examine the complexity of a wide range of sustainability challenges across the supply chain such as, for example, the climate, packaging, food losses and human rights. The innovation summit, Newtrition X, will address topics of change and will provide insights into personalized diets.

The Federal Government is also supporting the re-start of trade fairs. With the aid of the new funding program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), small and medium-sized companies based in Germany will receive financial support in participating at leading international trade fairs in Germany. The aim of the program is to support the marketing of innovative products, processes and services as efficiently as possible to open up export markets. The funding comprises of a subsidy towards the costs for stand rental and stand construction of up to €12,500 ($14,770).

New Food Conference

In partnership with Anuga 2021, the New Food Conference is picking up on the recent uptick in sales of plant-based products, as well as cellular agriculture and precision fermentation, which have the potential to fundamentally change the way food is grown.

The event, on October 10 and 11, will see professionals from around the world, both on-site in Cologne as well as across the digital platform, Anuga @home, investigating the progress of cultivated protein technologies.

Speakers will give an insight into the possibilities and business opportunities of cellular agriculture as a unique complementary solution to plant-based products and with regards to the creation of a sustainable food system.

The conference will focus on themes like the development of cell-based meat or fish (lab meat) as well as microorganism-based egg and dairy products. Consumer trends as well as ethical approaches will also be discussed.
