US retailer Meijer breaks ground on $100m Ohio dairy plant

Meijer has broken ground on a $100m (€75m) dairy production facility in Ohio - the US retailers' latest move into dairy manufacturing.

The extension of its Tipp City distribution centre will produce a wide range of own-brand products including fresh milk, cottage cheese and yogurt for its 100 stores in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

The manufacturing facility, Meijer's first dairy in the Buckeye State, will create around 100 jobs.

“Meijer is very pleased to continue our investment and growth in Ohio,” said Mark Murray, CEO, Meijer. “This expansion allows us to enhance our commitment to provide the freshest products for our customers, while growing our manufacturing capabilities and Meijer brand offerings.”

The Midwest retailer made its move into dairy production in March 2012 with the acquisition of Bareman’s Dairy in Michigan.

The plant, which was acquired to produce plain and chocolate milk for Meijer stores in Michigan, was renamed the Purple Cow Creamery.

CEO at the time, Hank Meijer, said at that the investment would enable it to provide its customers with “higher standards and lower prices.”

“Expanding into dairy operations will do just that,” he said.
