Sustainability and energy saving are two of the major trends driving current development in packaging and processing technology.

FoodProductionDaily.com caught up with Michaela Hattier of Multivac to talk about its prototype e-concept system designed to slash energy consumption its packaging processes by an impressive 20 per cent.

The marketing manager explained how the innovation runs entirely on electricity – with all pneunatically-driven componants replaced with electrically-driven systems. Thanks to proprietary technology developed by the company, the need for external compressed air and water supplies has also been made redundant.

Starting with its thermoforming equipment, Multivac said it hopes to roll out the breakthrough e-concept system across its entire range of new machines by 2015.
