New foil seal offers material and production efficiencies - company
The Netherlands-based company said the three-ply seal “challenges the traditional foil-based four layer laminate seal comprising of PET, foamed PE, aluminium and a seal layer, by replacing the PET and PE with a single layer of PET50.”
The new foil acts as an inlay to the screw cap of sauce bottles to ensure product freshness, pack integrity and tamper evidence. Once the bottle is filled, the screw cap is applied and, by induction sealing, the alufoil-based liner is sealed to the bottle. The PET50 successfully provides sufficient isolation to avoid melting the screw cap in the sealing process and it also achieves the rigidity function provided by the traditional foam layer, said the firm.
Move away from glass
“We estimate using our three-ply system results in a material saving of around 10 per cent,” Nigel Poole, sales and marketing director for performance films and foils told FoodProductionDaily.com. “This adaptation to an existing application has the same barrier properties as the four-ply seal and, because it cuts out one step in the production line, can speed up the product-to-market process.”
While the seal liner has been targeted initially at the sauce, condiment and dairy markets, he added the company had plans to roll it out across other segments.
“The greater movement from glass packaging to plastic-based containers such as PET will push demand for screw caps with foil-based induction seal linings”, said Poole.
VFP, which is part of the Clondalkin Group, manufactures packaging in 45 plants across 10 countries in Europe and North America. The company said it has annual sales in excess of €800m.
