Just one day to go: FPD lifts the lid on factors that make packs easy to open

Food processors are catering to consumer demands for convenience and compatibility with today’s on-the-go lifestyle through the use of containers with easy-opening lids but the challenge is to make sure that such lids not only peel easily but also seal effectively.

German research

The Fraunhofer AVV has been conducting research on factors influencing easy opening of packaging since 2005, and Karsten Thürling, research associate at the German institute, will present on a test method devised to determine peel and opening forces, and will report on progress made in terms of standardization of that measuring procedure.

Industry Insight

Mauri Azagury, packaging development manager EMEA, DuPont Packaging will provide an overview of factors driving the selection of sealing materials for easy-open lidding structures.

He will also compare the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches using solvent-based lacquers and extrudable polymers, as well as examples of materials used in successful applications involving different foods, container materials and peel strength requirements. Focusing on flexible packaging and peel-off lidding in the global retail packaging marketplace, the presentation from Rosemarie Downey, packaging research manager at Euromonitor International, will indicate dynamic areas of development in flexible packaging, from both a pack type and product consumption perspective.
