Global packaging supplier Tetra Pak hopes to boost its output capacity of material used for chilled beverages cartons such as milk by around half a billion packages through its latest factory opening.

The Finland-based packaging material factory, which has been opened after being “refurbished according to Tetra Pak standards”, will boost Tetra Pak’s output capacity by 500m packages per year, the company has announced.

The Sweden-based firm opened the facility in Imatra, Finland in the hope of expanding its Northern European gable top carton capacity.

Ideal location

“We have looked at several locations and from a cost and logistics point of view we found Imatra very attractive,” TetraPak Nordic communications director Emma Lefdal told

Laminated paper board, which is used to produce the packaging material, is manufactured in paper mills in the area - a major factor in the company's decision.

The company decided on the location as it is only six kilometres from the paper mills.

The short distance betweent the faciliteis, which are only six kilometres apart, will contribute towards the company's efforts to reduce the CO2 emissions for the transportation of paperboard to the factory, a Tetra Pak statement added.

ISO standards

The production facilities are expected to be ISO 14001 certified during Q1 2013, and plans are also underway to achieve World Class Manufacturing certification.

It hopes to implement World Class Manufacturing (WCM) practices at the plant - which are measures to drive improvements such as cost, efficiency, quality and safety wthin a facilty.

The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) is an environmental management system standard.
