Canadian dairy processor Agropur plans to invest more than $100m in a US whey processing facility to increase the plant’s capacity and upgrade existing technology.

The Quebec-based firm announced yesterday that improvements would be made to its Luxemburg whey processing plant in Wisconsin, with the money being channelled to increase production capacity and improve technology,

The firm also hopes to bring the plant’s wastewater treatment system up to the highest environmental standards.

The expansion is expected to be completed in 2014.

Agropur, which is jointly owned by more than 3,000 dairy farmers, processes around 3bn litres of milk per year at its 27 plants across Canada, the US, and Argentina.

It operates seven plants in the US – four of which are located in Wisconsin.

“This investment is Agropur’s largest capitalisation project to date. We are committed to and believe in the future of the US dairy industry, and we are here for the long haul,” said Agropur CEO, Robert Coallier.

DairyReporter.com approached Apgropur for comment on the investment, but no one from the firm was available prior to publication.
