Stonyfield extends YoBaby yogurt recall after quarantine error
Organic dairy Stonyfield has extended its April 2014 recall of potentially-contaminate YoBaby yogurt after being “informed” that more than 1,300 six-packs, supposedly in quarantine, were still on shelves.

In April 2014, Stonyfield initiated a recall of 188 4oz six-packs of Peach & Pear flavored YoBaby yogurt bearing the code date June 5 2014 from 122 Walmart and Target stores in Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware.

New Hampshire-based Stonyfield has now, following an error, recalled the product in question from “some additional stores, mostly Safeway and Fred Meyer” in Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

“Regrettably, we were just informed that 1,344 additional 4oz 6-packs of YoBaby Peach/Pear yogurts that were reported to be in quarantine prior to our original recall were, in fact, shipped by a distributor to 271 stores,” said Stonyfield in a statement.

The voluntary recall was ordered “in response to internal testing…that revealed the possibility that some products shipped from its Londonderry plant may have been affected by coliform contamination.”

Coliforms are a group of bacteria found in plant material, water, soil and in the digestive tracts and feces of humans and animals, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The majority of coliform strains are not harmful, according to the CDC. Some, such as Escherichia coli (E.coli) can however lead to illness.

To date, no cases of illness have been traced back to the recalled products, which are manufactured specially for babies.
