Arla Foods’ tactile lacquer packaging for cheese scoops award

Wipak Walsrode has won an innovation award for its tactile lacquer packaging, used to package cheese products for Arla Foods.

The company was recognized at the European Rotogravure Association’s ERA Packaging Gravure Awards 2015 in Izmir (Turkey) this month.

Jenny Klingberg, new product development manager, Yellow Cheese, Arla Foods, said the lacquer creates a smooth, structured surface and the effect achieved at the POS is far bigger than it anticipated.

Using the design and the tactile lacquer, we have achieved our target to convey to our consumers attributes such as tradition and handicraft by means of the new package,” she said.

Used in combination with a special gravure, the lacquer produces tactile effects and can simulate paper or textile structures.

Adolf Ahrens, head of pack design, Wipak Walsrode said the tactile lacquer catches the spirit of European retailers and producers, demonstrated by exhibitions such as FachPack in Nuremberg and Scanpack in Gothenburg.

The demand is enormous. The special tactile effects offer multiple possibilities to stand out from the competition at the Point of Sale and to positively stay in consumers’ minds,” he said.

The lacquer is also an attractive option for applications where paper composites cannot be implemented for technical reasons.”
