At least one person has been hospitalized by brucellosis with a link to raw milk, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The ill person drank milk from K-Bar Dairy in Paradise, Texas. Milk samples from the raw milk dairy in Wise County have tested positive for Brucella.

DSHS said raw, or unpasteurized, milk has been recalled and is advising those who consumed milk from the dairy since June to consult their health care provider.

The dairy is contacting customers and telling them to discard any milk they have but as it does not have a record of all of them DSHS is alerting the public about the recall.

No milk is being sold until the source of the outbreak is found and the dairy said it is doing additional testing on cows.

DSHS said it is uncertain how long Brucella may have been in the raw milk.

CDC said laboratory testing for the Brucella strain relies upon polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to establish presumptive results and recovery via blood culture for Brucella species confirmation.

The strain of Brucella recovered from the patient is resistant to rifampin and penicillin.

Brucella can cause symptoms including fever, sweats, headache, muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite and fatigue. They can persist for a long time or may come and go repeatedly.
