Canada’s Nutrinor Coopérative has received C$1m (US$820,000) in financial assistance from Canada Economic Development (CED) for Québec Regions.

The company said the funding would allow it to continue to create jobs in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of the province.

Denis Lemieux, Member of Parliament for Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, made the announcement in the company’s plant in Alma.

Dairy plant expansion

The expansion of the Alma dairy processing plant and the installation of a new production line for the development of new products will help Nutrinor diversify its dairy processing activities to provide niche products and improve its position in the marketplace, the company said.

The funding granted in the form of a repayable contribution through CED's Quebec Economic Development Program will go toward the expansion work and help the business acquire new strategic equipment.

Minister Bains said, by supporting Nutrinor, the Government of Canada is standing by its commitment to establish close partnerships with Québec businesses and support projects that are “undeniably helping stimulate economic growth in Canada."

Incorporated in 1949, Nutrinor is one the five largest food cooperatives in Québec, with 965 active farmer members.
