SIG & Amcor to focus on responsibly sourced aluminium foil packaging

SIG and Amcor have joined forces to ensure the aluminium foil supply chain is adhering to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI).

The ASI recently launched a Certification program for the aluminium value chain, focusing on responsible production, sourcing and stewardship with principles that need to be met including sustainability and significant energy use. 

Verification body DNV GL

The program addresses and reduces the impact of aluminium production: from mines, smelters and casting to semi-fabrication and manufacture of products containing aluminium. 

SIG and Amcor will take part in the program and subsequent planned ASI certification and have hired a third party verification body DNV GL to carry out pilot tests.

SIG carton packs

Amcor is one of SIG's main suppliers for aluminium in Europe. Its aluminium layer is used in most of SIG’s carton packs to protect the food from light, oxygen and external odors. 

Dr Christian Bauer, manager environmental affairs and product related sustainability, SIG, said initiatives such as this often take a long time to be adopted across the industry. 

This is a collaborative approach to share industry best practices and ensure we are at the forefront of sourcing aluminium foil that will meet or surpass the ASI performance standards​,” he said.
