AIPIA announces drupa 2020 partnership

How packaging can help brands in a mobile commerce world

AIPIA (Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association) has partnered with drupa 2020, printing technology show, to host a Members’ Village as well as demonstrations and presentations about Active & Intelligent Packaging technologies and how these relate to the printing sector.

Eef de Ferrante, CEO, AIPIA, made the announcement ahead of the association’s World Congress in Amsterdam (November 19-20), highlighting themes such as printed electronics, brand protection, shelf life extension, Augmented Reality (AR), mobile commerce, supply chain control, smart labels, condition monitoring, consumer engagement and fighting waste.

Many active and intelligent packaging (A&IP) components are created by advanced printing techniques such as vacuum deposition, holographics, embedded security coding and micro printing​,” said de Ferrante.

We are pleased to be partnering with drupa 2020 as it’s a chance for members to see new printing technologies which might be adapted to create A&IP products and meet converters and other specialists from the packaging and related sectors​.”

According to de Ferrante, printed electronics has the ability to make affordability and scalability of intelligent tags a reality.

The advances in print technologies and ink formulation, for example to maintain or improve conductivity but use recyclable materials, for PE are impressive. The current issues about plastic waste and recycling in general mean everyone must take responsibility for minimizing waste​,” he added.

The buzz of digitalization in the packaging sector is enormous but there is so much more such as printed electronics, embedded coding in QR and other codes, micro printing, nano ink and printing technologies, graphene, etc. Applications include traceability, serialisation, condition monitoring, thermochromic and photochromic inks for promotions​.”

Drupa will be held from June 16-26, 2020 at Düsseldorf ​Exhibition Center, in Germany, covering; prepress/print; premedia/multichannel; post press/converting/packaging; future technologies, materials and equipment/services/infrastructure.

Global megatrends

"Future and cross-sectional technologies and global megatrends have a major influence on our industry: applications for organic and printed electronics, nanotechnology and all further developments resulting from ‘industry 4.0‘ which will intervene in a large number of processes,​” said Sabine Geldermann, director, drupa, and global head, Print Technologies, Messe Düsseldorf.

In 2020, in addition to printing and converting processes, the focus will be on package printing, industrial and functional printing and additive manufacturing. In particular the growth potential of inkjet and expansion into new areas.

There will also be a number of forums including; touchpoint packaging, Touchpoint 3D fab + print, dna - drupa next age and drupa cube.

It’s all about cutting edge technology moving the bar higher or taking them into new areas. Relevant packaging themes of the future we expect to see at drupa 2020 include better printing to improve the quality of packaging and to offer value added items such as anti-counterfeit, security and consumer engagement features​,” added de Ferrante.

Brands, particularly big brands, are waking up to the fact they need to engage with their customers in new ways. Packaging can become one of their most powerful marketing tools. This is a theme we would like to highlight during drupa 2020​."
