Tetra Pak has partnered with Koenig & Bauer to offer full-colour digital printing on its carton packages, to meet demand for digital on-pack printing.

The technology will simplify the complexity of design handling, reduce time from design to print and open up opportunities for flexibility in order placement and product customization.

'Smart package'

Beverage brands can take advantage of benefits including on-package printing with the ability to include a variety of designs within the same order.

Charles Brand, executive VP, product management & commercial operations, Tetra Pak, said it wants to help customers explore ‘new avenues with a ‘smart’ package’, supporting their need for product customization, smaller batch sizes, greater traceability and the ability to interact with the consumer.

Our investment in this digital printer demonstrates our commitment to support customers with future-proof technologies as the digital revolution transforms the way we all do business,” he said.

Denton plant

The full-width digital printer is currently being built by Koenig & Bauer and will be installed at Tetra Pak’s converting plant at Denton, Texas with testing to begin in early 2020 in North America.

"We chose to place the first digital printer in Denton because it is part of the technology upgrade plan for our Denton plant, which has just been expanded and renovated in 2018. In addition, the start-up brands in the North American market are demanding more flexibility in product designs and order sizes and so this location will significantly benefit them," added Brand.

Carmen Becker, president/CEO, Tetra Pak US & Canada, said the digital press will meet demand for brands who look for opportunities to deliver greater customisation and personalization of their products.
